Diesel’s recycled Rehab Denim—first introduced on the FW22 runway—launched worldwide Monday.
Made in partnership with Spanish denim mill Tejidos Royo and released as part of its Pre-Spring 2023 range, Rehab Denim incorporates scraps from Diesel’s own cutting waste into the manufacturing process. Each garment blends 100 percent recycled cotton and recycled elastane from pre-consumer waste with Tencel lyocell with Refibra, Diesel said. Tejidos Royo’s Dry Indigo technology adds further environmental benefits, eliminating water consumption from the dyeing process and reducing the amount of chemicals and energy used. Diesel’s Pre-Spring 2023 range features three washes: “Fade Out,” Bleach and “Shadow,” which combines classic indigo with gray. The men’s, women’s and all-gender silhouettes include “monster” cargo pants with a toggled waist, an oversized bomber jacket, zip-up trucker jackets and an asymmetrical A-line skirt. Two styles of jeans include a low-rise straight leg silhouette with “deconstructed trompe l’oeil” details and raw edges.
“Diesel Rehab Denim is an ongoing process of learning and evolving to implement the most effective sustainability practices into our denim legacy,” Diesel said.
The worldwide launch of Diesel Rehab Denim comes as the denim brand’s parent company OTB Group works with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and its Tunisian manufacturing partners to create a “virtuous circle” for scraps from fabric-cutting operations. The pilot, unveiled in July, was to be developed in the second half of last year and through 2023.
According to OTB’s inaugural sustainability report, released last fall, the conglomerate intends to exclusively use sustainable or recycled materials by 2030. The company also committed to zero product destruction and exploring “the link between product durability and circularity.” Like others, OTB has set a goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
