South Bend sets record for Jan. 30 but doesn't break all-time record...yet

The temperature in South Bend reached a low of minus 20 about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The mercury in South Bend dropped to minus 20 at 9:37 a.m. Wednesday, according to Chris Roller, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in North Webster, Ind.

The recorded wind chill reached a low of minus 48 degrees during wind gusts a little later, about 10:09 a.m. Wednesday.

The minus 20 broke the city’s record for low temperature on Jan. 30. The previous record on that date was minus 13, set in 1966.

The air temperature warmed a few degrees during mid-day Wednesday, climbing to minus 15 by 2 p.m.

The air temperature around daybreak today is forecast to be about minus 23 — which means the all-time record could still be broken.

After sunrise today, a high pressure system will continue to move the arctic air eastward, and temperatures will start to moderate across Michiana.

And looking ahead, Friday will be relatively balmy, with temperatures in the mid-20s.

“Then it will start to feel like we’re in the tropics,” Roller joked.
