World’s largest diameter vertical shaft boring machine launched - The Tunnelling Journal

June 16th saw the lowering of the 230-ton main shaft boring machine ‘Dream’ to the bottom of the foundation pit on an underground smart parking garage project in the Jing’an District, Shanghai. The CRCHI “Dream” at 10m high and with an excavation diameter of 23.02m is the world’s largest diameter vertical shaft boring machine, according to CRCHI.

“Dream” integrates the excavation, slagging, support and guidance functions, applicable to the construction of super-large diameter shafts in soft soil and soft rock strata.

In recent years, many cities around the world have witnessed the accelerated construction of underground smart parking garages in super-large diameter and ultra-deep shafts. Shaft boring machines with an excavation diameter of 13m – 14m have been developed for mechanized shaft construction operations, but this is the first time a super-large diameter shaft boring machine has been developed with an excavation diameter of 15m+.

To address the requirements of super-large diameter excavations, while ensuring the efficiency of the vertical shaft excavation, CRCHI’s R&D team have designed mechanical shaft sinking equipment with enhanced reliability during construction through water bearing strata. “Dream” can now perform unmanned construction slashing costs by more than 50% and making construction operations safer.

The underground smart parking garage in Shanghai Jing’an District covers an area of 286 square meters above ground and 1,408 square meters underground, with a total of 19 floors. Each shaft will have 152 mechanical parking spaces. It is planned to build two deep foundation shafts, each with a diameter of 23m and a depth of 53m.
