The employee, Larry Lawrence, 39, was placing groceries in the back of the car, where a dog and a .22 rifle were also located. Lawrence started petting the dog when the rifle discharged, striking him in the chest. Witnesses and paramedics tried resuscitating Lawrence, but he died.

Linden police Chief David Dulude said it’s not clear how the gun discharged, but the shooting appeared to be accidental.
